Mick’s Story
Mick’s teenage years were marked by instability and uncertainty. Conflict at home reached a point where staying was no longer possible, and he was forced to leave without a plan.
“I didn’t really have a plan, I just knew I couldn’t stay where I was.”
Without a safe place to live, Mick drifted between friends’ couches and short-term housing. Each arrangement felt temporary, and he carried the weight of feeling like an unwelcome guest.
“It was awkward, I felt like I was always in the way.”
The constant moving left him exhausted. There was never a chance to build a routine, and never the certainty of where he would sleep next. His mental health began to suffer, and he lost confidence in his ability to keep up with study and work.
“You can’t really think about your future when you’re just trying to make it through the week.”
What made things worse was the sense of invisibility. Services did not always recognise the seriousness of his situation, and Mick felt as though he had slipped through the cracks.
“I felt like no one really saw how bad things were.”
When he was referred to Our Place, things began to shift. For the first time, Mick had somewhere safe to sleep and people who listened to him without judgment.
“It was the first time I felt like I was being taken seriously, like what I was going through mattered.”
The stability of a secure home gave him the breathing space he had been missing.
He was able to focus on the practical steps that would set him up for the future. With support from staff, he began to rebuild his routines, enrol in education, and develop skills to help him find work and independence.
“They helped me with the little things that made a big difference.”
Having consistent support and a stable environment allowed Mick to regain his confidence. He began setting goals and started to believe in himself again.
“I realised that I could actually do it, I could make something better for myself.”
Today, Mick has moved into stable housing and is building a future he once thought was out of reach. He feels proud of the progress he has made and of the fact that he did not give up when things were at their hardest.
“I’m proud that I kept going, even when it was really tough.”
His advice to others facing similar challenges is straightforward yet powerful.
“Even when it feels like nothing’s changing, just keep pushing. It does get better.”
Mick’s story is one of resilience and quiet strength. From instability and invisibility to stability and hope, he has proven to himself that adversity can be overcome. With support, he found the courage to keep going, and he is now creating a life that reflects his determination and perseverance.
