Annie’s Story
Annie’s journey into homelessness began with a family breakdown and conflict that left her without a safe place to live. As a young person, she found herself suddenly navigating life without stability or support.
“It all happened really fast. One day, I had somewhere to stay, the next, I didn’t.”
She moved between different places, trying to find somewhere she could rest, but nothing lasted. Couch surfing, unsafe rentals, and temporary arrangements became her reality. Each new place carried its own risks and challenges.
“I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere, like I was just floating.”
The uncertainty was overwhelming. It was hard to think about school, work, or friendships when every day was consumed by the question of where she would sleep.
“I couldn’t really plan for anything, I was just trying to survive.”
The instability also took a toll on her mental health. Feeling isolated and unsupported, she began to lose confidence in herself.
“I thought maybe this is just how it’s going to be.”
When Annie was connected with Our Place, her outlook began to shift. For the first time in a long time, she felt supported and understood.
“They actually listened to me; they didn’t make me feel like I was a problem.”
The stability of having a safe home meant she could begin to focus on more than just survival. With encouragement from staff, she started thinking about her goals and the future she wanted to create.
“They helped me feel like I could make something of myself, like I wasn’t just stuck.”
Having consistent housing allowed her to rebuild his routines, confidence, and self-belief. Step by step, she began to take back control of his life.
“I started to feel proud of myself again, even for the small things.”
Today, Annie has moved forward into stable housing and is working toward independence. She knows that his journey has been arduous, but she also knows that it has made her stronger.
“It taught me that I can survive things I never thought I could.”
Her advice to others going through the same experience is simple and powerful.
“Don’t give up. Even when it feels like you can’t see the end of it, keep going.”
Annie’s story demonstrates that even when someone feels invisible and hopeless, stability and support can transform their situation. From uncertainty and survival to hope and resilience, she has overcome adversity and is now building a life that once seemed out of reach.
