Emma’s Story

Emma’s journey into homelessness began with conflict at home. As a teenager, she faced challenging circumstances that made it impossible for her to stay with her family. She described leaving behind a situation that was unsafe and filled with stress, but stepping out into uncertainty brought its own set of fears.

“I didn’t have anywhere safe to go. I ended up moving around, staying with different people, not knowing how long I could stay each time.”

Life became a pattern of temporary solutions. Nights spent couch surfing or in unsafe housing left her feeling unsettled and unwelcome. Without stability, it was impossible to plan ahead or focus on her education.

“It was hard to think about school or the future when I was just trying to figure out where I would sleep that night.”

Emma also struggled with the isolation that came with housing instability. Friends and peers could not always understand what she was going through, and she carried the fear of being judged or seen as different.

“I felt like I couldn’t really tell people what was happening, I didn’t want them to look at me differently.”

When she was connected to Our Place, things began to change. For the first time in a long time, she had a place that was truly hers, a bed she could return to at the end of the day and staff who listened and supported her.

“It was the first time I felt like I had somewhere safe to come home to.”

The stability allowed Emma to focus on more than just survival. She was able to continue her studies and think about goals for her future. Having support meant she did not have to carry the weight of her struggles alone.

“They made me feel like I wasn’t by myself anymore.”

With encouragement and guidance, Emma began to rebuild her confidence. She learned skills that helped her feel more independent and capable. She started to believe in herself and her ability to build a different life.

“I realised that I could do more than I thought and that I could actually make a life for myself.”

Today, Emma has moved forward into a more stable and secure future. She is studying, working toward her goals, and creating a life that is not defined by the instability of her teenage years. She is proud that she did not give up, even when it felt impossible.

Her advice to others is simple and heartfelt.

“Don’t give up, even when it feels like nothing will change. It can get better if you keep going.”

Emma’s story is one of quiet courage. Though her experiences were difficult and often isolating, she found the strength to overcome them. With support, she turned uncertainty into stability, and now she is building a future filled with possibility and hope.
